Small green steps towards greener meetings

2026 is already well underway, and January is the perfect opportunity to pause, adjust your course, and set a direction for the new year. Perhaps you even want to set a greener direction for your business in the new year—including in your meeting and conference activities.

In this blog post, we share five specific tips for those of you who want to plan meetings with a little more green awareness and a little less climate impact.

1. Think green already during transport

A successful meeting begins long before the participants take their seats around the conference table. If you have chosen to meet outside your own premises—for example, at Bernstorff Castle—transportation to and from the location is one of the areas where small choices can easily make a big difference.

Bernstorff Castle is located just 9 km from Copenhagen city center and is easily accessible by both S-train and bus. Take the S-train to Charlottenlund Station, for example, from where the last part of the journey can easily be completed on foot or by bike along the pleasant Jægersborg Allé. Alternatively, you can get off at Bernstorffsvej Station and walk down Bernstorffsvej – from here, you can take a shortcut through the beautiful Bernstorff Slotshave on your way to the castle.

If guests arrive by S-train, there is ample opportunity to bring their bikes along. Not only is this a sustainable choice, but it also provides an opportunity to start the day at a slower pace – surrounded by nature.

If you would like to coordinate carpooling, that is also an option. We offer free parking right next to the Castle, making it easy to share transportation without logistical problems. And perhaps it will be in the back seat of a colleague's car that the first good ideas for the meeting will arise?

With the surroundings of Bernstorff Castle, the trip here is an experience in itself.

2. Serve greens – on the plate too

A good meeting requires energy, and that energy comes not only from inspiring content, but also from what we put on the plate. At Bernstorff Castle, we take great care to create meals that both taste fantastic and take into account seasonal ingredients and the surroundings.

Our kitchen works seasonally and makes everything from scratch with a deep love for seasonal ingredients and respect for the craft. In all meeting packages, we offer both vegetarian and plant-based alternatives, which are neither compromises nor afterthoughts, but tasty choices in their own right.

We are seeing more and more companies requesting green menus as a natural part of their meeting profile. And we are happy to accommodate this request – not as a limitation, but as a creative challenge. Whether you choose classic dishes with a green twist or go fully plant-based, our kitchen is ready with ideas and taste experiences that will elevate your meeting.

The choice of raw materials also contributes to the climate footprint.

3. Make materials digital and easy to share

A green meeting is not just about what is served, but also about what is shared. By avoiding printouts and instead sending meeting materials such as agendas, participant lists, and presentations digitally, you are taking a simple but effective step toward a more sustainable meeting culture.

At Bernstorff Castle, we are equipped for digital meetings. All our rooms are equipped with modern AV technology, including ClickShare systems, which make it easy for participants to present wirelessly directly from their own devices. At the same time, stable wireless internet throughout the building ensures that everyone has easy access to materials – before, during, and after the meeting.

The result? A professional and seamless experience where technology supports both content and intention. At the same time, you reduce unnecessary paper waste—without compromising on quality.

4. Choose venues with certified consideration

When choosing the location for your meeting, you are not only choosing the setting – you are also choosing values. At Bernstorff Castle, we are proud to be Green Key certified. This commits us to constantly thinking in terms of smarter solutions, from energy consumption and waste management to the choice of raw materials and cleaning products.

But it's not about appearing flawless. It's about taking responsibility where we can and making it easier for our guests to make green choices with peace of mind. The Green Key certification is not a stamp of perfect sustainability, but your guarantee that we work systematically and ambitiously with the environment, resources, and responsible operations.

When you choose a certified venue such as Bernstorff Castle, you are taking a concrete step in the right direction – without it feeling overly formal.

As an eco-labeled conference center, Bernstorff Castle is subject to a number of specific environmental requirements.

5. Think holistically and be realistic

No solution is completely sustainable—nor does it need to be. Because it is not perfection, but conscious choices that make a difference. Small adjustments in planning can add up to make a big difference—especially when they are incorporated as a natural part of the meeting experience.

At Bernstorff Castle, we work according to precisely that principle. We believe that sustainability should be accessible and actionable – without pointing fingers. That's why our booking team is always ready to offer advice and inspiration if you want to think a little greener for your next event. This could be anything from transport solutions and menu choices to technical options or waste management.

No matter how far along you are on your green journey, we will meet you where you are—and help you safely move forward from there.
