Bernstorff Castle

About Bernstorff Castle

A castle with more than 250 years of history

About us

Bernstorff Castle is one of the earliest neoclassical buildings - not just in Denmark, but in all of Europe. It was originally built as a summer residence for Count Bernstorff. It only became a castle when the then Crown Prince Christian VIII bought it.

The royal family used the castle as a "summer residence" until 1939, when the Danish Emergency Management Agency took over the buildings for their officer training. Thus, the castle was a "closed" training center until 2009.

It was then transformed into a hotel and conference center, which today also hosts many open and public events.

The proud history

History of Bernstorff Castle

The story of Bernstorff Castle starts with Count Johan Hartwig Ernst von Bernstorff.

Count Bernstorff built his "maison de plaisance" here, where there used to be a pheasant farm. It took 6 years to build the house, which was a summer residence for the Bernstorffs, until a certain Struensee dismissed him as Foreign Minister.

A strong team

Who are we?

The staff at Bernstorff Castle are hand-picked.

We do it because we like it - and each other. That's why Bernstorff Castle's director, Kirsten Daell, emphasizes that the castle's employees are "one big family" who love to do their best. For the sake of the guests.

Bernstorff Castle in harmony with nature

Our green policy

Located in the middle of the beautiful nature of Bernstorff Castle Gardens, with greenery as far as the eye can see, it is important to us to do our best to take care of the environment, nature and the climate.

That's why we have achieved the environmental certification - The Green Key.

Green Key or The Green Key is the international eco-label for tourism. The scheme started in Denmark, but has now been awarded to around 2100 companies in over 40 countries. Green Key is awarded to companies in the experience industry that go the extra mile to protect the environment.

The artworks

Johan Edvard Mandelberg painted the castle doors in the 1700s.

Visual artist Frederik Lindskov has decorated the corridors and rooms at Kavalergaarden with joyful works that seem inspired by electrical engineering and design motifs.

Painter Søs Brysch has her studio at Bernstorff Castle. Therefore, she can deliver beautiful, imaginative, playful paintings to the castle's meeting floor in a steady stream as they are sold.

And an eldorado for horse fans!

A gem! There's no better way to describe it. Dienstl Gut is a 23-room hotel with a beautiful garden, bathing lake, peace and quiet, birdsong and horse neighing. It is located in southeastern Carinthia, close to Klagenfurt on Lake Wörthersee.
